The Greater Accra Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has renewed its warning to the public to be extra careful when using electrical appliances, especially during the ongoing power outages affecting parts of the country.
The caution follows recent disruptions in electricity supply linked to a fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo. The situation has led to intermittent power in several communities, raising concerns about a possible increase in fire incidents.
According to the GNFS, unstable electricity supply can pose serious risks in homes and workplaces if proper safety measures are not followed. The Service is particularly worried about how people handle appliances when power is restored after an outage.
Speaking in an interview with Citi News, the Greater Accra Regional Fire Officer, ACFO II Rashid Kwame Nisawu, advised residents not to switch on appliances immediately after electricity returns. He explained that sudden power surges can damage devices, cause short circuits, and potentially lead to fire outbreaks.
He stressed that individuals must take personal responsibility for fire safety, noting that many everyday activities depend on energy and must be handled with care.
ACFO II Nisawu added that negligence, even in small actions, can have serious consequences, including destruction of property and loss of life. He urged the public to treat the current situation as a reminder to remain vigilant and strictly observe basic fire safety practices at all times.
